With a new update on Gmail for iOS now you can now schedule your emails in Gmail, with a new scheduled send feature. This new feature was added to Gmail on its 15th birthday in April 2019. After installing app update Version 6.0.190421, you can then “Get more done with Gmail by scheduling messages to be sent later! This is a great way to remember a friend’s birthday, or even respect others’ digital well-being by not sending messages over the weekend,” explains Google.

This means you’ll no longer have to rely on third-party Chrome extensions to schedule your messages. Earlier Gmail users had to rely on third-party apps or extensions such as Boomerang or IFTTT to schedule their messages for later, though recent changes removed IFTTT support. But now with Gmail’s native scheduling feature it is easier than having to install a third-party extension—and is integrated more elegantly into the Gmail interface.

Gmail has also recently added other features once unique to extensions like Boomerang, including the ability to snooze conversations or set up automatic follow-up reminders, though Boomerang still has useful additions like the ability to pause your inbox or incorporate message tracking. Hopefully, more of these features will be added to Gmail in the future.

  • If you’re using the Gmail app on your iPhone, double-check for any pending updates waiting to be installed.
  • Once the feature is available, draft your message as usual. When you’re ready to schedule, click the arrow next to the blue “Send” button on your PC and click “schedule send.” A pop-up menu will appear with preset scheduling options, such as “tomorrow morning,” though you can also set a specific date and times as well.
  • On mobile, tap the three stacked dots “more” icon next to the send arrow, then tap “schedule send.” A new menu will appear that lets you choose when you’d like to send the message.
  • You can edit a scheduled message’s delivery time by opening the message and following the above steps to change the date and/or time.

Emails slated to the schedule will now show up in a new label titled “Scheduled”, while a tiny scheduled send icon also is placed next to those ready to send away in the future. The ability to schedule emails is handy if you’re vying to have your message read by recipients first thing in the morning, or if you want to remind yourself of something via email in the future and more to your email, while also letting you mark messages as important.
